Curators Note

Welcome to Sonic Residues, an event in which I have collected electroacoustic works from all over the world, from well known composers and from those that are not yet so well known. It has been an enjoyable experience molding them into an exciting day of events and concerts to be experienced in the fabulous surroundings of Linden-gallery and arts center.

I'm sure you will find today's events a rewarding sonic adventure.

One of the purposes of creating this festival is to provide an interface between the composer and the audience. To provide an environment encouraging exploration of the vast range of electroacoustic music being made all around the world. Finally it is hoped that I can provide some insights for you into how and why these works are created.

The works that you will hear fall very broadly into four categories:

• Works that are generated solely from text or voice based material, which has been broken down re-synthesised, manipulated and formed back into the shape that you hear as the final work.
• Works that use found sounds, ie. any sounds that occur within our everyday environment. These sounds are collected, categorised, put together in different types of forms, and moulded to create worlds in which people might walk across gravel, swim and fly through the sky at the same time. These are collections of sounds that have been morphed and manipulated to create new worlds of your own imagining.
• Works that use exclusively electronically generated sounds. Sounds that do not drawn on any naturally occurring noises as source material for their synthesis but have generated the sounds that create the work from scratch. These works tend to be the most abstract in this program and set out, even more than the other categories of works, to be non-programmatic, that is, not to be specifically descriptive of an environment, a vista, or an experience.
• Interactive works - works in which you can play, move, and run to create sound. These are works that allow you to physically engage with them and for your movement and behavior to create the work itself. These pieces have had many parameters set by their composers. They offer you an experience that has been designed and carefully thought out, whilst distinguishing themselves by requiring you to be physically active within them.

   

  Sonic Residues has been made possible by generous support from Linden - arts center and gallery and by a community grant from the City of Port Phillip. It would not have occurred without all the artists involved giving generously of their work.

  As you can see from the program there are many concerts throughout the day. There is a cafe where you will hear exciting random sonic events throughout the day and can meet and talk to the composers, whilst absorbing this unique day of sonic entertainment.

  It is hoped that, with your support, Sonic Residues will become a regular festival of electroacoustic music and sound art.
