SONIC RESIDUES

a Day of Electro Acoustic Music and Sound Art Events

Press Release

December, 1997

LINDEN - arts centre & gallery, 26 Acland St, St Kilda, Sunday 21 December

SONIC RESIDUES on Sunday 21 December is a globally unique event designed to encourage a wider public interest in electro acoustic music and sound art. Involving over 40 (local and international) composers and sound artists, this special one day event promises a veritable audio feast of the finest - resonating within the 1870's historical mansion - LINDEN - arts centre & gallery at 26 Acland St in St Kilda.

SONIC RESIDUES consists of two major components, a series of hour-long concerts and sound installation works (which evolve throughout the day). General public can make a day of it. Food and drink will be available in the courtyard, as they are encouraged to wander in and out between individual concerts experiencing the evolution of the sonic space.

An all-day ticket is $10 or a single concert ticket is $5.

The Series of hour-long concerts will present the pre-recorded works of local composers (including Ros Bandt and Warren Burt) and composers from the US, UK, Italy, France, Germany and South America. Pieces include award winning compositions such as 'Beyond the Bridge' by John Palmer ('94 Bourges International Electro acoustic Award) and those honoured and commissioned by major international festivals including 'Unsound Objects' by Dr Jonty Harrison ('97 Priz Ars Electronica / '95 ICMA Banff). Each concert is made up of 4-6 pieces some of which involve live performances from artists including musicians, poets, & dancers. The pieces marry a range of artistic elements including video and calligraphy. Many of the local composers will talk about their work and accept questions from the audience.

There will be four concerts scheduled for 12pm, 2pm, 4pm, and 6pm.

Sonic Residues Concerts Programme

The installation works focus on interaction with the environment, exploring the fringes of composition, and the use of structured sound as music. One installation enables you to compose your own music via chasing objects on a computer. Another uses chaos mathematics to create sound; you can make music via the Very Nervous System which senses movement and witness a human sound installation unique to Australia.

He has composed music for various theatre companies both here and in the UK, and was feature composer on ABC TV, Review and Fridge Door programs and Radio National's Arts Today. Formally a lecturer at the Conservatorium of Tasmania, he now tutors Sound Design at RMIT where is currently undertaking research into immersive virtual environments.

By producing this event he has achieved two complementary aims - collating the World's finest experimental sounds for presentation in Melbourne and enabling general accessibility to the realm of electro acoustic music and sound art.
